Wind Erosion Moving air can pick up and move sediment like water, but only extreme winds (hurricane or tornado) can transport large particles.

Wind Erosion Suspension- small particles stay airborne for long distances. Saltation- bouncing transport along the ground.

Wind Erosion Most areas that experience wind transport receive little rain and have little vegetation (ex. desert)

Wind Erosion Deflation- Lowering of the land surface due to the loss of surface particles

Wind Erosion Abrasion- particles of sand rub up against the surface of rocks or other materials Ventifacts- rocks shaped by abrasion

Wind Disposition Wind disposition occurs when wind slows down and the suspended material drops out of the air. Dune- a pile of wind blown sand

Types of dunes Barchan Transverse Parabolic Longitudinal

Dune Migration

Loess Fine grained wind blown deposits

Glaciers

Glaciers
