What is Geography? Geography is the study of the land, water, plants, animals and people of a place Fourth Grade Science and Social Studies

What are landforms? Landforms are the natural shapes or features of the Earth’s surface There are many different types of landforms found on the earth.

Tectonic plates Parts of the Earth’s crust slowly moved and pushed together the forces wrinkled the land making mountains, valleys, and other landforms

Glacier A glaciers are huge sheets of ice, that move slowly carving and scraping soil and rocks, changing the Earth’s surface

Erosion Erosion is the wearing away over time by wind, water, or ice

mountain A mountain is a place on the Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it.

ridge A ridge is the top edge of a mountain range

peak A peak is the top edge of a mountain

canyon A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides.

valley A valley is a lowland area between higher lands such as hills or mountains.

hill A hill is usually a rounded elevation of land much lower than a mountain

plain A plain is a flat area on Earth’s surface.

plateau A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it.

desert A desert is very dry region of land

peninsula A peninsula is a piece of land that is connected to a large land mass and is almost surrounded by water

island An island is land that is completely surrounded by water.

Estuary An estuary is a mix of salt water and fresh water Philadelphia Delaware River

Tributary Tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a large river
