1 What is Geography? Geography is the study of the land, water, plants, animals and people of a place Fourth Grade Science and Social Studies

2 What are landforms? Landforms are the natural shapes or features of the Earth’s surface There are many different types of landforms found on the earth.

3 Tectonic plates Parts of the Earth’s crust slowly moved and pushed together the forces wrinkled the land making mountains, valleys, and other landforms

4 Glacier A glaciers are huge sheets of ice, that move slowly carving and scraping soil and rocks, changing the Earth’s surface

5 Erosion Erosion is the wearing away over time by wind, water, or ice

6 mountain A mountain is a place on the Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it.

7 ridge A ridge is the top edge of a mountain range

8 peak A peak is the top edge of a mountain

9 canyon A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides.

10 valley A valley is a lowland area between higher lands such as hills or mountains.

11 hill A hill is usually a rounded elevation of land much lower than a mountain

12 plain A plain is a flat area on Earth’s surface.

13 plateau A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it.

14 desert A desert is very dry region of land

16 river A river is a long flowing body of water.

17 delta Delta is a triangular- shaped area of land at the mouth of a river

18 lake A lake is water that is completely surrounded by land.

19 ocean Oceans are the largest bodies of water on Earth.

20 coast A coast is the area where the ocean touches the land.

21 peninsula A peninsula is a piece of land that is connected to a large land mass and is almost surrounded by water

22 island An island is land that is completely surrounded by water.

23 Estuary An estuary is a mix of salt water and fresh water Philadelphia Delaware River

24 Tributary Tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a large river
