2  Studies have shown that employees who are depressed are less productive and are absent more often  Other studies have shown that organized screening and enhanced depression treatment can significantly improve health Systematic efforts to identify and treat depression in the workplace: Significantly improves employee health and productivity Leads to lower costs overall for the employer Journal of the American Medical Association - September 26, 2007 Few employers have implemented such programs, in part because their return on investment is unclear.

3 Depression continues to be one of the top conditions and cost drivers for our population Percentage of members with depression and the total cost is increasing Mood disorders are often triggered by environmental factors Depression is under-diagnosed and under-treated Depression

4  Decreased productivity Missed deadlines; sloppy work Morale problems or a change in disposition Lack of cooperation and social withdrawal  Safety Problems or Accidents  Absenteeism or Tardiness Complaints of being tired all the time Complaints of unexplained aches and pains  Alcohol and/or Drug Abuse

6 Possible Origins of Work-Related Depression: Unsafe or unsatisfactory work environment Problems, financial strain or illness at home Lack of promotion prospects Feelings of being unappreciated Poor relations with management Not enough participation in decisions affecting them Too much routine No opportunity to use or refine skills Stress Poor health Depression

7 Awareness and education are key to treatment Remove barriers and provide opportunities Address environment and workplace factors that can contribute to the onset of depression or mood disorders
