UNIT TOPIC: COMPREHENSION LESSON TOPIC: ESSENTIAL TIPS ON COMPREHENSION

OBJECTIVES : At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1.define the term ’ comprehension’; 2.mention the essentials tips on answering comprehension questions ; 3. read any given comprehension passage fluently and 4.explain the categories of questions in comprehension.

INTRODUCTION Comprehension is the ability to read and understand a particular passage. It tests the student’s skill to interpret a given text by giving correct answers to questions asked and by drawing inferences from the passage.

ESSENTIAL TIPS ON COMPREHENSION. 1.Read the passage thoroughly to know the themes and points. 2.Go through the questions carefully and keep them in mind. 3.Read the passage again to determine likely answers to the questions. 4.Write your answers in correct sentences. Avoid changing the ideas in the passage. 5.Adhere strictly to the instructions given and avoid wasting time on a question. 6.Go through your answers again to correct possible error(s).

CATEGORIES OF QUESTIONS IN COMPREHENSION. 1.CONTENT QUESTIONS: here, the student is expected to read and determine the answers from the information given in the passage. 2. QUESTIONS ON INFERRED MEANING : here, the student is expected to use his personal knowledge to supply the answer using the passage as a background. 3.QUESTIONS ON FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS: here, the student is tested on his knowledge of figures of speech and idiomatic expressions. 4.QUESTIONS ON GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES: the student is tested on grammatical names and functions. 5.WORD REPLACEMENT: test on the students’ ability to replace given words or phrases with suitable synonyms.
