1 DEVELOPING A DATABASE OF HEALTH CARE NEEDS FOR THE INCARCERATED VIRGIN ISLANDER Lisa LaPlace-Knight Grant Support: National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, NIH (# P20MD002286).

2 Health concerns that are overrepresented within incarcerated populations include: Substance abuse Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Other infectious diseases Perpetration and victimization by violence Mental illness, chronic disease Reproductive health problems Freudenberg,2001

3  The USVI has been unable to provide adequate health care to our incarcerated persons.  “ As a result of suits filed against the Virgin Islands Department of Justice by the American Civil Liberties Union the prison system within the USVI has been trying to meet the mandates of a federal consent decree for many years,” (AP, 2007).  Since 1986, St Croix has a Federal Department of Justice Consent decree.

4 Why do it? The purpose of this study is to identify how prevalent chronic and infectious diseases are in the Virgin Island prison population? How will it be done? By reviewing all Medical Charts of sentenced persons on both islands and then developing a computer database Benefits? Fiscally sound to taxpayers to anticipate costs and medical needs of the patients. Have Medical Needs data in central area for future analysis
