1 Essential Question: How can beaches be protected?
Chapter 3 Lesson 2

2 Vocabulary barrier island beach nourishment dredging jetty sea wall

3 Sandy Beaches & Barrier Islands
Rivers pick up sand and other sediments. The rivers carry these into oceans. Ocean waves pick up the sand and sediment Then the sand & sediment get deposited along coastlines forming a beach. Barrier Island = land formed by the build up of sand & dirt offshore from the mainland Examples: Golden Isles (Jekyll, St. Simons)

4 Causes of beach erosion
Rivers flowing in new & different ways Dredging = deepening or widening a river or harbor Jetties = thin, narrow wall built from the shoreline into the ocean. Rising ocean levels = causes beaches to erode quickly

5 How to stop beach erosion
Beach nourishment = dumping new sand Sea walls = tall wall built along the rear edge of a beach Sea walls don’t always work; they can cause problems. Some scientists believe it’s best to leave the beaches alone.

6 Rising ocean levels What is happening to Earth’s temperature? It is getting warmer & warmer Global warming = warmer temps cause ice & snow to melt making ocean levels rise & a change to coastlines How does global warming affect ocean levels? Polar regions are melting (Arctic & Antarctica)

7 A barrier island is formed.
In summary: What happens when sand and sediment are dropped along the coastline? A sandy beach is formed. What happens when sand and sediment dropped in the ocean build into a new landform? A barrier island is formed.

8 dredging, jetties, rising ocean levels
In summary: Name 3 factors that change a beach from day to day. ocean waves, tides, wind Name 3 things that cause erosion. dredging, jetties, rising ocean levels

9 In summary: Why are ocean levels rising?
Global warming causes ice & snow to melt which changes the ocean levels. Name 2 ways to stop erosion. beach nourishment, sea walls However, it is best to _______________________.

10 CRCT Prep People build which of these structures to slow beach erosion? barrier island river dam reservoir sea wall
