UNIT ESSENTIAL QUESTION How are number properties and Expressions used to represent situations And relationships? Unit one : EXPRESSIONS AND NUMBER PROPERTIES
2
Evaluating algebraic expressions Lesson 1-1 Lesson 1-2
3
LESSON ESSENTIAL QUESTION How can you write and evaluate an Expression that represents a real life Problem?
4
VOCABULARY NUMERICAL EXPRESSION– an expression that contains only numbers and operations symbols. Ex. 7 + 24 – 3 (5 -2)
5
VOCABULARY ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION – an expression that contains Operation symbols and one or more variables. Ex. 5 + 2n – 3y
6
VOCABULARY EVALUATE – to substitute a number for a variable. Ex. 3 + 5y – 2c y = 3 and c = 2
7
VOCABULARY VARIABLE- A symbol usually a letter used to represent a number. In addition to the symbol x, the other ways to show Multiplication are :
8
MAIN IDEADETAIL NOTES STEP 1: SIMPLIFY INSIDE GROUPING SYMBOLS ORDER OF OPERATIONS STEP 2: EVALUATE POWERS STEP 3: MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE LEFT TO RIGHT STEP 4: ADD AND SUBTRACT LEFT TO RIGHT
9
Use PEMDAS to remember order of operations P: parentheses E: exponents M: multiply D: divide A: add S: subtract

EXAMPLES
12
Write and solve an expression to find the total cost of planting flowers in a garden. The packs of flowers Cost $4 per pack and we need 5 packs of flowers. The Bag of dirt cost $3 per bag and we need 1 bag. The Bottle of fertilizer cost $4 per bottle and we need 1 Bottle of fertilizer.
13
EXAMPLES WORDS COST OF 5 FLOW ER PACKS PLUSCOST OF DIRT PLUSCOST OF FERTIL IZER EXPRESSION5 x $4+$3+$4
14
5 X $4 + $3 + $4 $20 + $3 + $4 $23 + $4 $27 total cost for planting flowers in the garden
15
Write and solve an expression to find the total cost of Planting flowers and buying a shovel. We need 6 packs Of flowers for $5 per pack, 2 bags of dirt for a price of $2 per bag, a bottle of fertilizer for $3.99 and a shovel For $16.
17
Evaluating Algebraic Expressions Step one: write the expression Step two: substitute the value for the variables Step three: simplify inside grouping symbols Step four: evaluate powers Step five: multiply and divide left to right Step six: add and subtract left to right
