2. The thirteen – star, thirteen – stripe national flag of the USA was adopted on June 14, 1777. There was one star and one stripe for every state in the new country. Gradually, as new states were added to the Union, a new star was added to the national flag. There are now 50 stars on the American flag, one for each state.
