The Volunteer to Donor Circle COVA Annual Conference Tuesday – March 23, 2010

Understanding Volunteers  Best Recruiters  Walking Encyclopedias  “Live” Billboards and Radio Commercials  Cheerleaders  Passionate – Have great stories to tell!  Dedicated  Multi Task Oriented  Resource Driven

Why should you cultivate donors to become volunteers?  Philanthropic people will give  Both time and money  Treat both groups as one in the same  Volunteers should give $$ and donors should give their time  Money follows volunteers  Matching gifts  Make available options to give / support

Top Ten Reasons to Cultivate Volunteers into Donors  They are already in your midst  Committee members  Board members  Regulars  Recent event/project  Volunteers know you – all about you! (we’ll the organization)  Strongly connected by already giving their time  No “make the case” is needed

 Volunteers understand the organization  Services and programs  Budgets  Volunteers are selective (or picky)  Work needs to have impact  Be honest and transparent - or the $$ will walk  Never to late  To ask volunteers to donate  Should be a regular practice  Use Social Media  Tell the stories  Imagine the reach – spread the message

 Volunteers can tell “your” story differently  Personal connections  Giving $$ to people not to the organization  Now more than EVER!  Reach inside your “box”  Implement a fund development plan – focused on organization’s volunteers  More likely to give – really, they are!  Ask them!  Make it easy to give you $$  Over 65% of individuals who donate time will ALSO donate MONEY – to the SAME organization! http://blogs.volunteermatch.org/engagingvolunteers/2009/12/03 http://blogs.volunteermatch.org/engagingvolunteers/2009/12/03http://blogs.volunteermatch.org/engagingvolunteers/2009/12/03

And the Winner is!  Volunteers WILL donate!  On average – 10 times more $$ www.jffixler.com

Ways to Engage Volunteers to Become Donors  Fundraising events  Bidder numbers, silent auction participant  Name your organization as benefactor  Let the volunteer group do the event for you!  Give options  Create ongoing opportunities  Various levels

Remember! Volunteers don’t or won’t give simply because they weren’t asked to do so! Did you remember to ask? Don’t assume volunteers don’t have capacity to give
