Warm-up Pre Test!
2
Pre Test Something that can be spread from person to person or though the environment Though contaminated object, vectors, and contaminated food and water A virus is a piece of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat, while bacteria are single celled microorganisms that live almost everywhere on Earth
3
Pre Test The Symptoms of the flu, which include high fever & fatigue, are more serious that the symptoms of the common cold Avoid close contact with sick people, wash your hands often, & avoid touching your mouth, eyes, & nose Hepatitis cannot be treated with antibiotics because it is causes by a virus
4
Communicable Diseases Health 1
5
Learning Targets Identify pathogens that cause communicable diseases Explain the causes of: –Transmission –Symptoms –Treatment
6
Communicable Diseases A Communicable disease is a disease that is spread from one living thing to another of through the environment. Communicable disease are caused by Pathogens Remember: Non-Communicable disease are not transferable to others.
7
Pathogens A Pathogen is an organism that causes disease. Pathogens include: –Bacteria –Viruses –Fungi –Protozoans –Rickettsias
8
Pathogens Bacteria: Are single celled micro-organisms that live almost everywhere on earth. Most are harmless Many are essential for life –Digest food –Make some of the vitamins you need Multiply through cell division Examples –Tetanus –Salmonella –Lyme Disease
9
Pathogens Viruses: are pieces of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat By themselves that are inactive Need living cells to reproduce Run their course & eventually are killed by the immune system Antibiotics do NOT work against viruses Invade all forms of life –Mammals, plants, bacteria Examples –Mononucleosis –Cold –Chickenpox –Ebola
10
Pathogens Fungi: Plant like Diseases of the skin Diseases of membranes or lungs Examples –Athlete’s Foot –Ringworm –Jock Itch
11
Pathogens Protozoans: single celled organisms that are larger and more complex than bacteria Most are harmless Those that cause disease are found in people with weak immune systems Examples –Malaria –Dysentery
12
Pathogens Rickettsia: pathogens that resemble bacteria Act like viruses Come through the bites of insects Examples –Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever –Australian tick typhus
