Science Overview Mrs. Briggs & Mrs. Ostrander Key Concepts: Cycles: Importance of cycles in science and in renewing our world. Life Science: Ecosystems, Organisms Chemistry: Properties of Matter, Magnetism, State of Matter, Density, Solubility, Conductivity Force and Motion: Types of forces on objects: Gravity, Friction, Push/Pull Energy: Investigate various forms of energy such has mechanical, light, sound, and electrical Earth Science: Rock cycle, formation of fossils, creation of fossil fuels, landforms, rotations of earth & moon, weather & climate changes, History of Science: Famous scientists and important discoveries Major Assignments, Review sheets, and projects will be uploaded to Edmodo, or posted to our faculty websites.

Social Studies Overview Mr. Gebhardt, Mrs. Briggs, Mrs. Fields, & Mrs. Vickery This school year we will learn about U.S. History. We study the history of the United States and focus on our history, geography, explorers, government and culture. These are the specific topics: Basic Geography Native Americans and Explorers Colonies Slavery Tensions Between Colonies and Britain Declaration of Independence Revolutionary War The Constitution and Bill of Rights Civil War

Reading/Writing Overview Mrs. Fields & Mr. Gebhardt Key Concepts – Reader/Writer Journals – Reader’/Writer’s Workshop – Focus on Independent Reading – Narrative, Expository, and Persuasive Writing – Writing Poetry and Scripts – Genre Study, Critical Reading in Fiction and Non-Fiction, Exploring Poetry and Drama – Research – 20 minutes of nightly reading expected. – Edmodo reflections and responses

Skyward Skyward is also known as Family and Student Access. Can check your child’s grades as often as you would like. Students can access school work files at home. You will need to download Citrix plugin.

“Bring Your Own Device” aka - BYOD What is BYOD? Why is the district embracing this idea? What if I’m not comfortable with my child bringing electronics from home? When is it acceptable? Who is responsible for the devices?

How to help your child be successful in 5 th grade! 1. Set up an atmosphere that fosters success. 2. Allow them to learn from their mistakes. 3. Teach them to self- advocate. 4. Talk to them often. Keep those lines of communication open. 5. Check grades regularly. 6. Know that we are your partners in this journey.
