Health: is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Health Triangle: should be balanced and includes mental/emotional, social, and physical health. Health Triangle Social Mental/Emo Physical

Physical Health: how well your body functions. Mental/Emotional Health: how well you meet the demands of daily life, and your ability to process information. Social Health: the way you get along with others.

Health continuum Also known as the Wellness Scale. Review: What does the wellness scale look like? Name the 2 extremes on the scale. What are some other areas you can find on the scale? Where do most Americans fall? Give an example of the type of behaviors you might see a person participate in at each end of the scale.

Lifestyle Factors: habits that affect how long a person lives/quality of life. Risk behaviors: actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. Give an example of a risk behavior. Healthful Behaviors: actions that keep you and others safe and free from harm and injury. Give an example of a healthful behavior.

Why do we have to take Health? Health education: the providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices. Learning about health give people the tools they need to live a long, energetic, productive life. It will help us to: A (Achieve) H (Display Honor) and S (Provide Service).

Healthy People 2010 Is a plan to improve the health of the people in the United States. It is updated every 10 years. The US is working on updates for 2020 now.

Health literacy: a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness

Cumulative risks: related risks that increase in effect with each added risk Abstinence: avoiding harmful behaviors Write down one harmful behavior Describe what positive results would happen from abstaining from that behavior. Share that information with 5 people in this classroom. You have 2 minutes to complete this task.

Health People 2020 Activity: 2010 is here, time to plan for 2020. If you were working with the President to improve the health of our country what would you focus on for Healthy People 2020? Work with the person sitting next to you. Discuss and write down your five issues. Describe how our country could reach each of the goals you designed. Be detailed. Come up with a slogan for Health People 2020. Design your HP 2020 logo.

Communication Clearly say what you mean. –Use I messages to state your position. –I messages have 3 parts. The event, the result and your feelings. –They do not blame or shame anyone.

Communication Pay attention to how you say something. –Use a respectful tone. –Make sure your body language reflects what you are saying. –Be a good listener. Do not interrupt the person talking. How can you show that you are listening?

Refusal skills: communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe or unhealthful, or go against your values. There are 5 refusal skills to remember.

More Health Skills Conflict resolution: the process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving. When dealing with a conflict: Take time to calm down and think. When talking about it, speak calmly and listen. Ask questions when you need to. Be respectful and try to brainstorm solutions.

Stress Stress management: ways to deal with or overcome the negative effects of stress What is the definition of stress? Write the answer in your notes.

Stress Management cont. Stress: the reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands. Stressor: anything that causes stress. They can be real or imagined, anticipated or unexpected. Perception: the act of becoming aware through the senses.

Phases of Response Alarm – High Alert. “fight or flight” meaning defend or flee Resistance – Your body adapts and reacts to the stressor. You may perform at a higher level for a brief period. Fatigue – You begin to tire and lose the ability to manage other stressors effectively.

Psychosomatic Response A physical reaction that results from stress rather than from an injury or illness.

Homework More ideas to improve our Health for 2020. Using resources (web, library, etc.) create a public service message on one of the proposed objectives for Healthy People 2020. You will record you service message on video and the most informative and interesting message may be used on the morning announcements. Include the following: Chose 1 of the objectives and explain how it has effected the Health of Americans in a negative way. (ex. Statistics, facts) Explain how the nation can meet that objective and improve upon it for 2020. Explain what a high school student could do to improve upon it. Explain how someone could help others to meet that objective. List all of the resources you used to complete the assignment.
