4 Objectives -recall at least two of the major inventions of the antebellum era and at least one benefit of each. -describe one benefit and two problems with railroads. -make connections between the telegraph in the 1840s to the cell phone today. -give two benefits railroads had over canals.

5 Industry in the North New machines were being invented. First sewing machine was invented in 1846. This allowed dozens of shirts to be made in the time it took to make one by hand.

6 Industry in the North John Deere invented a light weight steel plow, which a horse could pull faster than the old iron plow.

7 Industry in the North Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper in 1847. It could mow five times as much wheat and other grains as hand tools could. Many farm hands lost jobs and went to work for factories in northern cities.

9 The telegraph was invented in 1844. It sent electrical signals along a wire to someone who would translate them. Dots, dashes, and spaces were turned into words. Almost instant communication

10 Industry in the North Railroads began to pop up with the invention of the steam- powered locomotive. Problems with RRs 1. People thought they would lose their jobs. 2. Locomotives often broke down. 3. Embers started fires.
