The Claim (Why We Need The Pipeline) Natural Gas Is: Clean Cheap Reliable
7
CLEAN? Compared To What? CO 2 Output (pounds/MWh) Avg. Natural Gas Plant in MA: 1,210 Avg. for all sources in MA for 2012: 910 MA State Goals For Carbon Emissions 25% reduction by 2020 80% reduction by 2050
8
The Pipeline Environmental and Public Safety Concerns Climate change Methane more powerful GHG than carbon dioxide Gas leaks Enough to negate the benefits of switching to natural gas vehicles Increased reliance on fossil fuels Pipeline explosions Radon: The leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers EPA concentration limit: 2 pCi/L Marcellus shale concentration: 30 - 70 pCi/L Habitat destruction

Cheap? Compared To What? What is the current fuel cost of: Solar? Wind? Hydro? Last year, 50% of the state's new energy was either solar or wind. The fact that our average carbon footprint is lower than that of NG tells us that these technologies are working
10
ISO New England's #1 Concern Oversees the day-to-day operation of New England's power system and transmission lines. (The air-traffic controllers of our electric power grid) The ISO New England: 2013 Regional Electricity Outlook Report listed their #1 priority as: To mitigate our dependence on natural gas. 48% of power generation is currently natural gas Suppliers will charge what the market will bear.
11
What Will The Price Be In The Future? Recently hit a 5-year high. Came back down based on weather reports. Going back up again based on investor expectations Concern in markets now over 6 new export terminals Is this what we want to base our electric grid on? What happens when we further increase our dependence on NG?
12
Reliable? Compared To What? A five-year-old well has produced ½ of the gas it will produce in its lifetime. When will solar, wind, hydro run out?
13
The Other Fuel Source (Energy Efficiency)
14
Natural Gas Not Clean Not Cheap Not Reliable We Can Do Better, And We Already Are Doing Better
