2  Mr. Joshua Eury  Grew up in Leesburg  Went to Carver and Graduated from LHS  B.S. Music Education from USF  Married to my beautiful bride, Christina  My third year teaching  Will be a father in December!

3  Beginning Band – open to ALL students who have no musical experience  Intermediate Band – all students not in Advanced Band  Advanced Band – the top concert band (students hand picked after final exams the previous year)  Jazz Band – Audition only

4 What do we do in band? Christmas & Spring Concerts Rehearsals – 1 hour 45 minutes March in the Leesburg Christmas Parade and the Fruitland Park Day Parade Solo and Ensemble (optional in beginning band) All-District Concert & Jazz Bands (optional) Fundraisers (more on those later…) End of the Year Field Trip (reward for those who have earned the privilege of going)

5 Yes, band is a class! And yes, band is a grade! Attendance is ALWAYS REQUIRED and CRUCIAL to our success as a program!! Band grades are based off of a point system: Performances and Rehearsals – 100 points Weekly Practice – 50 points per week based on a rubric Playing quizzes – 20 points based on a rubric Participation/Materials in class – 10 points per week Written Assignments - varied

6  Starting Costs: › Uniform › Instrument  Rental or Purchase  School rental › Mouthpiece › Reeds (if needed) › Cleaning Supplies › Method Book › Theory Workbook  Continuing Costs: › Instrument (if rented) › Reeds (if needed) › Method Book › Theory Workbook › Polo shirts, reeds, and all books are purchased through Mr. Eury.

7 Supplies Cost Due: 9/17/13  Order supplies using order form.  What you need determines your cost Expected Fundraising Contribution (EFC) Due: 5/1/14  $130 per student  Can be “worked off” by fundraising  Pays for State Band fees, transportation, new music, new instruments, etc.

9 We offer a variety of instruments for students to learn: Flute Oboe Clarinet Alto Saxophone Tenor Saxophone Trumpet Horn Trombone Euphonium Tuba Bass Guitar Percussion - mallets, snare, bass, triangle, maracas, cymbals, etc.

10 Instrument testing: - What is your child going to be successful at? - What are they going to have fun playing? - What is going to fit the balance of the band?

11  Sept. 17 th 7pm in Cafeteria  Students will be sent home with a sheet indicating what instrument they are playing.  If renting, from Music Shack or the school, you must go to this!  If you own your instrument, you do not need to come to this unless you need accessories.  Supplies Cost is due for everyone.  Students assigned lockers - $2

12 Renting: Music Shack Rent-to-own $20-40/month Includes maintenance and repair contract School rental Limited availability $100/year Must purchase own mouthpiece and reeds Buying: Continuing in band Can be expensive Might not include all materials needed Be careful where you buy Don’t buy anything yet

13  CMS Band Polo Shirt  Black DRESS pants  Black DRESS shoes  Black socks or stockings– calf high  Black belt  Uniforms are for performances only  Do not wear to school unless told to.

14 Last Year we Made:  Walk-a-thon Raised $8,500  Spaghetti Dinner › Raised $2,200  Money goes towards: › New Music › New Instruments › Instrument Repairs › Supplies › Buses for events › State band fees › Performance costs › Scholarships for field trips and music camps This year o We will do Walk-a-thon and Spaghetti Dinner again along with 2 other fundraiser. o All money raised an credit towards EFC.

15 We have a great place for parents too!  Band Parent Meetings › October 1 st, Nov. 19 th, Feb. 4 th, April 1 st at 6pm in Band Room › 1 st meeting of the year - August 27, 2013  6 PM in the CMS Cafeteria › Extra credit for students if parent comes  LIMA- Leesburg Intermediate Music Association  Volunteering/Chaperoning › NEW PROCEDURE THIS YEAR!! › Good for 3 years; also transfers schools › Level I vs. Level II

17  Smartmusic is a software program used by music educators to enhance learning both in and outside of the classroom. We will be using Smartmusic this year at Carver.  New to Band = Wait to hear from me  2 nd or 3 rd year in band = renew when needed.  You will need to purchase your own computer microphone and headphones. Cheap = O.K.

18  Sept. 2 nd – No School  Sept. 16 th – Walk-a-thon starts (bring addresses)  Sept. 17 th – Instrument Rental Night – 7pm in Cafeteria  Sept. 27 th – No School  Oct. 1 st – Band Parent Meeting 6pm – Band room  Oct. 5 th – CFMAI @ LHS Stadium – Extra Credit! All day  Oct. 21 st – No School  Oct. 24 th Walk-a-thon!  Nov. 2 nd – FBA @ LHS Stadium – Extra Credit! All Day  Nov. 11 th – No School  Nov. 19 th – Band Parent Meeting 6pm – Band room  Nov. 25-29 – Thanksgiving Break
