3 Statistics National Crime Prevention Cont’d 45% - 57% of all incidents happen in chat rooms A recent survey found that 10% of 770 young people surveyed were made to feel “threatened, embarrassed or uncomfortable” by a photo taken of them using a cell- phone camera. Girls are more likely than boys to be the target of cyberbullying. According to extensive research on middle school age students and teenagers online, the fastest growing problems within the world of cyberbullying

4 Statistics National Crime Prevention According to the National Crime Prevention Center, over 40% of all teenagers with Internet access have reported being bullied online during the past year. 10% of those kids who were bullied told their parents about the incident, and that a mere 18% of the cases were reported to a local or national law enforcement agency. 15% of parents are “in the know” about their kids’ social networking habits 58% of 4th through 8th graders reported having mean or cruel things said to them online.

6 Bully vs. Cyberbullying  Bully: Put downer who harasses and demeans others, especially those who they think are different or inferior.

7 What is Cyberbullying?  Using communication technology such as email, cell phones, chat rooms instant messaging, blogs, or defamatory personal websites to send or post repeated deliberate, cruel and harmful text or images.

8 8 Forms of Cyberbullying 1. Flaming: Using inflammatory or vulgar words to provoke an on-line fight. 2. Harassment: Continually sending vicious, mean, or disturbing e-mails to an individual. 3. Denigration: Spreading rumors, lies, or gossip to hurt a person’s reputation. 4. Impersonation: Posting offensive or aggressive messages under another person’s name.

9 8 Forms of Cyberbullying Cont’d 5. Outing: Posting or sharing confidential or compromising information or images. 6. Trickery: Fooling someone into sharing personal information which then post online. 7. Exclusion: Purposefully excluding someone from an online group. 8. Cyberstalking: Ongoing harassment and denigration that causes a person considerable fear for his/her safety.

10 Protecting yourself on-line  Guard screen names & passwords.  Guard contact information  Use gender neutral screen names.  Accept messages only from people on your friends list  Take a stand amongst your peers  Use Netiquette

11 If Harassed  Tell an adult  Leave area immediately (chat room, website, online gaming site, etc.)  Never Reply. Block the sender.  Save harassing emails & send them to your internet service provider.  If the bullying involves threats, tell the police.

12 Warning Signs of Cyberbullying Victim  Unexpectedly stops using the computer  Appears nervous or jumpy when an instant message, text message or email appears  Appears uneasy about going to school or outside in general  Appears to be angry, depressed or frustrated after using the computer  Avoids discussions about what they are doing on the computer  Become abnormally withdrawn from usually friends and family members

13 Statistics-Are based on a 2005 survey from 1500 adolescents participants  34.4% of respondents reported that they were bullied.  12.6% were physically threatened and 5 % were scared for their safety.  55.6 percent experienced bullying in chatrooms, and 48.9 using computer text.  28% were bullied by email.
