As a result of today’s barriers, the ‘right’ to play sport is becoming a ‘privilege’. The crisis is now and the time to act is today… Timmins Kidsport

Background… ¡In 1993 KidSport TM was formed in BC to directly respond to the crisis and help kids break through the financial barriers previously limiting or preventing involvement in organized sport. ¡Since 1993, KidSport TM has expanded into 10 provinces and territories and exists in over 100 local chapters from coast to coast. ¡Timmins has the honour of being the first local chapter to launch in Ontario! ¡Launching of the Timmins chapter took place on June 7, 2002 at the Shania Twain Centre ¡The first grant was issued the next day to a 6 year old baseball player! ¡Since June 2002 we have issued over 120 registration and equipment grants to deserving kids!!!

KidSport™ works to… Help disadvantaged youth receive the SAME sport opportunities as other youth. Combat rising user fees and the cost of participating in sport. Address concerns over rising rate of child obesity. Provide access to organized sport Help kids lead healthy and active lifestyles.

What can sport do for a child? SPORT…..enables a child to build confidence and self-esteem. SPORT…..teaches a child to set personal goals. SPORT…..teaches a child about “teamwork” and other leadership skills. SPORT…..helps a child live a healthier and more active life. SPORT…..is about having fun. SPORT…..is about reaching for the stars….from playground to podium.

Why is involvement in sport so important? The lack of physical activity directly affects the health and personal development of children and youth. In turn, this impact spreads to families, our communities and our country: n Children – Lose the access and impact of proactive life-building habits and skills. n Families – Subjected to additional societal influences and burden that threaten the family unit. n Communities- Fail to provide the tools to develop and nurture its human resources into the leaders of tomorrow. n Country- Directly impacts and depletes the social and health services creating a burden on our economic development.
