I SPY Where Did Mr. Smidley find all that information?
2
Mr. Seymour Smidley wants to write a science book for elementary students.
3
He spends many years researching all kinds of information to put into his book.
4
Can you name some sources he would use for his book? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
5
Mr. Smidley finally publishes his book. Each student at Smart School has a copy of his book for their science class.
6
Information books like Mr. Smidley’s Science Book always: Show where the author found his/her information These CLUES are called Reference Features
7
Bibliography Works Cited Citations End Notes
8
Bibliography Mr. Smidley made a list of EVERY book, magazine, website, database, etc. that he read to write his science book. He placed this list in the back of his book. HOWEVER, he did not use all the information in his book.
9
Bibliography “Aurora.” The World Book Encyclopedia. 1999 ed. Belt, Mike. “Night Lights Put on a Show.” LJWorld.com 9 Nov.2004. 14 Apr. 2005 http://www.ljworld.com/section/citynews/st orypr/187176. http://www.ljworld.com/section/citynews/st orypr/187176
10
Works Cited Mr. Smidley made a separate list from the bibliography for those sources he actually used to WRITE his book.
11
Works Cited “Aurora.” The World Book Encyclopedia. 1999 ed. Egeland, Alv. Auroral Mythology. 2003 Nordlyssenteret. 14 Apr. 2005 http://www.northern- lights.no/english/mythology/index.shtml. http://www.northern- lights.no/english/mythology/index.shtml
12
Citation When Mr. Smidley would write some information in his book, he would let his readers know where he got the information…he would give you a clue right in the text!
13
Citation Background – The northern lights are also called the aurora borealis. They are streaks and waves of light. They take shape in the sky near Earth’s North Pole. The lights are a common sight in Norway – (Science Anytime 29). – Turn to your Works Cited and find this.
14
Bibliography __________ Works Cited __________ Everthing Mr. Smidley read Everything Mr. Smidley used to write his book
15
End Notes Sometimes Mr. Smidley wanted to give you additional information about something, but he did not want to include it in the paragraph. Instead, he would give you another clue to find extra information elsewhere. Look at the End Notes list
16
End Notes 1. The sun makes up 98 percent of the mass of our solar system. It would take over 1,300,000 Earths to fill the inside of the sun. The outer layer of the sun is the coolest layer at 11,000 degrees F. 2. 3.
17
Let’s Play..I SPY On your handout of “The Northern Lights” I SPY a citation. Circle the citations on this page.
18
I SPY On your handout…I SPY some end notes. Put a square box around the end notes.
19
I SPY On end note number 3 about the Vikings, I spy “other information” on another page (look to the end notes page). Underline this information.
20
I SPY I spy three sources that Mr. Smidley did not use in his book, even though he did read them. Can you name the three sources and the reference feature? Write them down.
21
I SPY I spy four sources that Mr. Smidley did use in his book. Can you write what kind of sources these were? Example: are they books, websites, etc.? Can you tell me the name of the reference feature that lists them?
22
Let’s Review What are the four Reference Features? Where would these be located in a book? How does the bibliography differ from the works cited? What is the difference between a citation and an end note?
23
Great Work You found Mr. Smidley’s Clues!
