Alaska By Region

Southwest Alaska Made up of the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands, the Kodiak Island group, and the Alaska Peninsula. Land is grassy tundra and some spruce forests. Most of the land is undeveloped wilderness, without roads. Can only get there by air or water.

Far North Alaska The Arctic Region Characterized by its vast, frozen sparsely populated tundra. Land of the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Air travel is the lifeline to the north.

Interior Alaska The Yukon River runs nearly 2,000 miles across Interior Alaska and Canada. Fairbanks is at the heart of this region. Mt. McKinley, the highest mountain in North America, is surrounded by Denali National Park. University of Alaska is also in this region.

South-Central Alaska More than half of Alaska’s residents live here. The region has farmlands, fishing towns, national parks, and modern cities. Most easily accessible region. Anchorage is the major city in this region.

Southeast Alaska Characterized as having a wet, mild, maritime climate. This is a region of snow capped mountains and forested islands. The capital of Alaska, Juneau, is here.
