Natural Resources: Raw materials that we take from the environment for human use. Renewable Resources: can be “renewed” or made again by nature Non-renewable Resources: cannot be “renewed” by nature and is lost once used. Energy
2
Nonrenewable Energy Petroleum- processed crude oil –Used to make fuels, plastics, detergents, fibers such as nylon and polyesters Coal- a type of rock composed mostly of carbon- made from pressurized plant remains- coal is pulverized then burned –Used mostly to create energy Natural gas- mostly methane gas, other gases include butane, propane, and others –Used for electricity, cooking (gas stoves), heating/cooling, water heaters Nuclear- the splitting of the nuclei of atoms to release energy –Used for electricity
3
Renewable Energy Hydropower- energy created from flowing water Bioenergy- energy created from organic material (plants[ wood, corn, etc.] ) Solar power- created from the sun Wind power- created from the wind Wave power- created from ocean waves Geothermal- created from heat stored in the earth

How we power what we use Nonrenewable resources –Petroleum (oil)39% –Coal23% –Natural gas23% –Nuclear8% Renewable resources –Hydropower3% –Bioenergy (plants)3% –Other (solar, wind)1%
5
Where we use energy Industrial- industry and manufacturing –Energy to make metals from raw ore, plastic from oil, or denim from cotton Transportation- personal use of cars, buses, trains, or planes Residential- energy used in our homes –Lights, all electric appliances, natural gas for furnace, stove, or water heater Commercial- business or trade –Restaurants, stores
