During the 1920s & 1930s, the U.S. established an isolationist foreign policy (Kellogg-Briand Pact) Why did America want to maintain isolationism at this time? REVIEW ___________________________________ Isolationism

Most Americans supported isolationism: In 1935, 90% of Americans described themselves as isolationists due to Great Depression Girl Scouts changed the color of their uniforms to appear less militaristic (from khaki to green) Senator Gerald Nye (ND) held hearings stating that banks & large corporations encouraged U.S. entry into WWI because of the large profits made (Dawes Plan) Isolationism

In response, Congress passed the Neutrality Acts: Forbid the sale of arms to military aggressive nations Prohibited loans or credit to warring nations Allowed goods other than weapons to be sold on a cash and carry basis only (immediate payment for supplies) Were these Acts neutral? Many Americans opposed the Neutrality Acts- WHY? America First Committee,a key isolationist group in the 30s & 40s,argued the only way to keep America safe was to stay completely neutral However, many accused this group of supporting liberals and socialists Anti-War Movement

Some members of the AFC went too far Charles Lindbergh was a famous spokesman for the AFC and adamantly supported Hitler and the Nazis The reason for his support was due to anti- Semitism, anti-communism, & racial purity The AFC quickly lost support due to these claims Anti-War Movement
