#1 – ESR90x ONLY Pair mode with client in data arrival and client HB/no HB setting connects on power and should not. This happens only if the COM ports connected to client and server are left open. If you hit in Vlinx, it powers up and does not connect as expected. For ESR901 only, the terminal block passes and the DB9 fails. Note ESP90x does not have this bug.

#2 Pair mode with client in data arrival, client HB/no HB, client & server serial timeout = 0, and client & server TCP timeout = 0 settings does not receive data consistantly in terms of sizes of data sent (see tables below). This was tested on and off the network for ESR901 with same results. ESR902 and ESR904 tested off the network. Work around – For ALL ESR901/902/904 Setting server or client serial/TCP timeout = xx seems to help. First initial attempt will fail, then subsequential try after timeouts has expire will be successful. Up to 20K bytes was tested successfully.

#3 Windows NT – SHLWAPI.dll files are found to be missing in some service packs. The installation will go through fine. The error will occur when you run the Vlinx software and do not have this file in the proper directory. Work around – Copy this file from somewhere into the proper directory.

#4 Fresh factory unit or when set to "default“ ONLY in Vlinx (web, Telnet, console defaulting is ok), port 1displays "RS-232", but actually is operating at console mode. Work around – hit in Vlinx or in web, telnet or console, everything will be okay. Another alternative is to use default in web, Telnet or console only. Note that hitting reset on the unit does not fix it.

ESP90x Common Q/A V1.00 Same as last training, left for reference only. No training required.

Basic Troubleshooting 1.Find the device with Vlinx software 2.Setup an appropriate IP address for user’s LAN 3.Create a virtual COM port 4.Ping the device on the LAN 5.Telnet to the device via the IP address setup and port 23 6.Access the VCOM from a terminal emulation program (Comtest, hyperterminal, etc).Loopback data through the device using VCOM or Telnet (IP & port number)

Q/A #1 Can’t find device with Vlinx software 1. May be in different subnet 2. May be going through router between the PC and ESP90x/ESR90x 3. Check LED status (Power LED solid, Link LED solid, Ready LED blinking) 4. Disconnect all DB9 port(s) 5. Check network cables 6. Reset the device by pushing the indented button with pencil/pen 7. Repower the device by removing power and reapplying 8. Try connecting directly to the Vlinx with a network cross-over cable

Q/A #2 Setup an appropriate IP address for the device 1.The assigned IP address must conform to the user’s local network 2. If 255.255.255.0 is used for Netmask, the first 3 sets of digits must match for the PC and ESP90x/ESR90x device 3. Be sure the user click on the button or in the config screen to save the IP address changes

Q/A #3 Creating VCOM 1. If Vlinx software can find the device, the user should be able to setup VCOM 2. The created VCOM port should show up in Window’s device manager 3. Check the port number used (default is 4000, DO NOT USE 5300, 8888, 8889, or 8890 as these are used by the unit for monitor and control)

Q/A #4 Pinging the device 1. If there is no ping, check the IP address again 2. Check the IP address of the sending PC (go to DOS prompt and type in “ipconfig” for Win 2K/XP) 3. Check the Link LED (should be solid)

Q/A #5 Telnet to the device 1.Make sure the dipswitches are DOWN or OFF so that it is NOT in console mode 2. Be sure also that the software selected mode is also NOT in console mode

Q/A #6 Access the COM port 1.Should be able to open the COM port using Hyperterminal, Comtest, etc 2. If no connection, check the remote IP and be sure it is “255.255.255.255” for full access by any IP address

Q/A #7 Loopback using VCOM or Telnet 1. If no loopback, check the flow control (NONE for loopback test) 2. Check baudrate used 3. Try loopback using telnet (IP and port number) or Hyperterminal Winsock (IP and port number)

Q/A #8 LEDS Power LED Solid ON when power apply Link LED Solid ON when Ethernet LAN connected (blinking with data) -green = 100Mbpsyellow = 10Mbpsflashing = error Ready LED Blinking for normal operation (failure otherwise)

Q/A #9 Dipswitches UnitDipswitchesOperation ESP9013All ON or up = console mode (9600 8-N-1) All OFF or down = run or normal mode ESP9023All ON or up = console mode (9600 8-N-1) All OFF or down = run or normal mode ESP9040Fully software selectable ESR9012#1 ON or up = console mode (9600 8-N-1) #1 OFF or down = run or normal mode #2 ON or up = terminal block mode #2 OFF or down = DB9 mode ESR9021ON or up = console mode (9600 8-N-1) OFF or down = run or normal mode ESR9041ON or up = console mode (9600 8-N-1) OFF or down = run or normal mode

Q/A #10 Port Information – They must be open in the firewall for correct operations. PortUse/Control 5300Heartbeat & configuration setting in TCP mode (i.e. pair tunneling mode) 8888Vlinx update 8889Configuration setting in UDP mode 8890Vlinx monitor

Q/A #11 Keep loosing connection to the ESP90x. Keeps dropping off the network. If we can ping or Telnet to the unit, the unit is not dead. If ping fails, check ESP90x menu to see if the unit is setup in a communication mode of RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485. If working with ESP901 or ESP902, all switches on the unit should be in the down position. If working with ESR90x, the console dipswitch should be in the down position. Please use Vlinx management software to search for ESP90x units. Note that the search feature uses UDP broadcast packets which confines the search to the local LAN or on 1 side of a router/gateway. If the unit is located outside the LAN, he should use specified IP address to reach the unit. If the IP address conflict with other device in the LAN, it will fail to reach the unit. To check for duplicate IP addresses, remove the ESP90x from the LAN and ping the ESP90x address. If you receive a response, there is another unit on the LAN with the same IP address. A software reset from the Telnet session should make the unit available for a new client connection. If the unit neither can be pinged nor Telnet, the unit maybe dead (if the green READY LED is not blinking) or the network is broken (if the LINK LED is not ON). A hard power cycle will be necessary. Please fill out “ESP ESR Support Template Vx.xx” to capture the customer’s setup for further support.

Q/A #12 How do I access the device from outside the local LAN. There are many exceptions to this procedure. Normally, the ESP90x needs to have what is called a public IP address. By public, this means that no once else in the world can use this. For example, at B&B, a governing organization has assigned us public IP addresses using 12.32.1xx.xxx IP address. From the outside location, first ping the unit’s IP address, then Telnet to the menu. If both failed, there is a good chance the Network Administrator has the firewall blocking communications. At this point, please talk to the Network Administrator to inform him of your lack of communications. He should be able to help open TCP IP address, port #, Telnet port #23, and the ping port #. It is very important that the user puts in the correct IP address for the Gateway under configuration pertaining to the their LAN.

Q/A #13 VCOM has been installed and hyperterminal or similar serial program has confirmed that loopback works. However, the customer’s software still does not see this VCOM. Please check that their software can access as high of COM number as the VCOM has been setup (i.e. VCOM 20 or whatever). Otherwise, we may have to lower this VCOM number to a range the software can handle. Note that Hyperterminal can ONLY access limited port number ranges.
