2 Importance of Scholarship  Definition: Scholarship includes creative works, research and any other activities that incorporate an inquiry process  Roles of scholarship in the academy Fundamental to a campus community where everyone is a learner: faculty and students. Teacher-scholar model  Current conditions Expectations of newer faculty & faculty morale Student expectations & needs State fiscal issues

3 Task at Hand  Improve communication re: scholarship Administration, Faculty, Staff, Students  Identify and address barriers  Disseminate successful approaches  Increase participation by undergraduates 1. Evaluate current status of scholarship on campus 2. Develop a plan to enhance scholarship

5 Major Areas  Participation Determine level of participation in scholarly activities on campus by faculty and students Develop methods to evaluate level of participation in the future  Outreach Gather input from campus community Develop methods to draw more faculty into scholarly activity in the future ○ E.g. training, seminars, interdisciplinary efforts, etc.

6 Major Areas continued…  Systems Characterize and evaluate support system and infrastructure; make recommendations to streamline and increase ease of use Develop a permanent committee tasked with support of scholarly activity  Students Characterize and evaluate the role of scholarly activities in the student experience and make recommendations for increases in activity  Time Develop options and make recommendations regarding faculty time allocation and load issues

8  Enhancing Undergraduate Education through Independent Study and Research Dr. Brad Stith University of Colorado-Denver Friday February 1st 4:00 PM Erie Room University Center  Dr. Stith is active in the Council on Undergraduate Research. His presentation will highlight the role of undergraduate research and independent study in improving student success and satisfaction. He will share successful strategies for developing and strengthening undergraduate research and scholarship in a variety of disciplines. Dr. Stith's visit is being sponsored by Office of Academic Affairs, TLAC, and the NMU chapter of Sigma Xi.
