2 Figurative Language A writers tool It helps the reader to visualize (see) what the writer is thinking It puts a picture in the readers mind

3 Simile A simile is used to compare two things It uses the words “like” or “as” to make comparisons.

4 Simile Krissy is as pretty as a picture. Her hair shines like the sun. Her eyes sparkle like the stars in the sky.

5 Metaphor A metaphor is used to compare two things Instead of saying something is “like” or “as” --- a metaphor states that it just IS.

6 Metaphor John’s mind is a computer. My mom is a workhorse. Bob is a snake in the grass.

7 Simile Marty’s feet smell like rotten fish.

8 Metaphor Ginger is an angel.

9 Simile or Metaphor?? An emerald is as green as grass. A diamond is a brilliant stone. Playing cards with Sam is like trying to outsmart a Vegas slot machine. Her words were as dull as dirt. When he ate, he was a crocodile, opening wide and snapping his jaws suddenly for the kill. Her house was a wild circus act.
