AVTC Model Based Design Curriculum Development Project

Automated Manual Transmission Module 2 Lesson 2

Automated Manual Transmission Similar to a manual transmission but uses electronic sensors, microcontroller and actuators to execute gear shifts on the command of the driver or by a computer Removes the need to press the clutch pedal since the clutch is actuated by electronic equipment which can synchronize the timing and torque required to make quick, smooth gear shifts Source: http://www.autotrader.com/research/article/car-info/214430/definitions-automated-manual-transmission.jsp

Automated Clutch The microcontroller sends a signal to hydro-mechanical unit to either engage or disengage the clutch, which is kept in close synchronization with the gear-shifting action the driver has started The clutch actuator can be a hydro mechanical unit consists a servomotor coupled to a gear arrangement to move the clutch actuator, or it can be a electric actuator Source: www.exlar.com

System Structure of AMT The automatic clutch engagement and gear change facilitated by the use of –Clutch actuator –Transmission actuator

Advantages of Automated Manual Transmission Basic manual transmission need not to be modified Convenience of not having to operate clutch and possibly gear selection Reduce driver fatigue Improve fuel efficiency Enable precise automatic gear shifting Driver need not learn to drive a conventional manual transmission

Tests and Reviews 1.Driver needs to press the clutch while driving an automated manual transmission 1.True 2.False 2.Which of the following are not advantages of an automated manual transmission 1.Reduce driver fatigue 2.Improve fuel efficiency and use of maintenance 3.Enables precise automatic gear shifting 4.None of the above 3.Which of the following are not used with an automated manual transmission? 1.Clutch actuator 2.Transmission actuator 3.Torque converter
