7. THETHESIS as part of an INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH LEAD- A general observation about the SUBJECT that grabs the reader’s attention. THESIS STATEMENT- Your paper’s specific perspective on its SUBJECT What do you remember about leads from the Personal Narrative unit?

8. What NOT to do in a lead Can you figure out what is wrong with them? Prompt: What day is the worst day of the week? Lead 1: The worst day of the week is Monday. Lead 2: Webster’s Dictionary defines “worst” as the most unfavorable, distressing, or unpleasant. This obviously defines Monday. So what DO I do?

9. Effective Leads for Persuasive Essays- Figurative Language Highly descriptive language and imagery paints a picture to capture your reader’s attention. In an essay arguing that Monday is the worst day of the week: Metaphor: Monday is a thick, spicy soup that’s hard to swallow, but we know we must get it down. Simile: Monday is like the little brother you never asked for; it’s always sneaks up on you. Personification: Monday morning always arrives at your door too early and raps loudly until you are forced to get up and acknowledge its existence.

10. Effective Leads for Persuasive Essays- Anecdote People like stories! Using a short, specific anecdote is a great way to capture your reader’s interest. In an essay arguing for a later start time for school: Beep! Beep! The alarm blared as I put the pillow over my head, hoping the sound would go away, but it only seemed to be getting louder. I pulled myself out of bed and got ready for school, eyes half closed and in a trance.

11. Effective Leads for Persuasive Essays- Quotation An interesting or humorous quotation that relates to your topic is a good way to hook your reader…if you have the time to research one! In an essay about the importance of reading: Groucho Marx once said, “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend; inside of a dog it’s too dark to read anyway.”
