2 Let’s Discuss  What is the difference between something that is abstract and something that is concrete?  Does it make a difference which one you use in your writing?  Why is it important to add detail? How do we do this?  Using Words that paint pictures  Sensory detail = Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch  Using Figurative Language  Simile  Metaphor  Personification  Hyperbole  Allusion  Onomonopeia  And more  Using Strong, Active Verbs  stalk vs walk,  tired vs exhausted,  funny vs side-splitting  Using vivid describing words  Describe specific emotions or feelings I can use sensory and concrete details in my writing.

3 Sensory Details What are they?How are they used?  Sight  Sound  Smell  Taste  Touch  He pulled on the boots.  He pulled on the brown work boots.  He pulled on the boots silently so as not to wake anyone up in the early morning.  He yanked on the boots while hastily chewing his granola bar not even tasting it.  He pulled on the boots and laced them tight around his ankles.  He yanked on the boots quickly while the smell of cold air released in the door. I can use sensory and concrete details in my writing.

4 Let’s Practice Write down 5 facts/things you noticed about the picture. They should be basic facts about the picture. Now, turn the facts into basic sentences (at least 3) Now, go through and add one of each type of sensory details. Now try adding some figurative language.

6 Let’s Practice  Students should take out a draft that they considered particularly difficult or “boring” in their opinion, or perhaps that is too low on the word count. Identify 5 places within the draft that they could add additional detail by:  Using Words that paint pictures  Using Figurative Language  Using Strong, Active Verbs  Using vivid describing words  Describe specific emotions or feelings
