Motivation Intrinsic motivation – Based on taking pleasure in an activity Extrinsic motivation – Comes from factors outside the individual, such as doing something for money, prizes or rewards – Can also be based on avoiding negative consequences Almost all people are driven by both types of motivations

Intrinsic Motivation Students with intrinsic motivation: – Enjoy activities more – Want to learn the subject material, not just get a good grade – Gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter – Are more willing to take on difficult challenges – Obtain a high level of satisfaction during the task – Are guided by areas where they are intrinsically motivated when selecting a career – Have less anxiety and depression – Have a more positive self-identity – Are more curious

4. Extrinsic Motivation Students with extrinsic motivation: – Can build intrinsic motivation – Put forth increased effort – Feel proud because of the recognition of achievement – Find they like doing the activity or it is not that bad – Study in groups because it is externally inspiring and they learn new things from group members – Are willing to spend more on the task – Can meet high standards in school
