Existing: Forest Sector Assessment 1990-2010 (Latvian) Planned on 2014: Forest Sector Assessment 2011-2014 (Latvian, English) Forest Statistics in LATVIA 2013 Forest Sector Assessment -As a result of 2 years hard discussions amendments of Forest law were agreed and regulation on national criteria and indicators on evaluation of sustainable forest management were accepted. -Evaluation of sustainable forest management should be done every five years.

New projects Forest Statistics in LATVIA 2013 The modernization of State Forest Service geographical information system is ongoing. The main aim is to improve system functionality and comparability to other state systems. New research project on Forest decision support system is ongoing. Project is developed by Latvian State Forest Research Institute "Silava “ in collaboration with University of Agriculture. The decision support programme “MESTRA” should be ready at the beginning of next year.

Forest Statistics in LATVIA 2013 Data processing and reporting -International reports – FRA, JFSQ, IEEAF, MCPFE, TQ are prepared by Ministry of Agriculture -Data are processed mainly using MS Access and SQL. -2 employees in Ministry of Agriculture are involved in data processing and reporting. -Data providers and advisers are Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, State Forest Service, Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute, Latvian Forest Industry Federation and Forest sector associations

-Continue to prepare international reports (JFSQ, IEEAF, FRA, MCPFE, TQ) on time -Provide data for Forest Sector Assessment 2011-2014 -Update database procedures according to changes in international reports -Create new procedures to improve data processing performance -Improve statistics on fuel wood – make proposals for next household survey -Improve data quality Forest Statistics in LATVIA 2013 Main challenges for next years
