THE LIFE OF CHRIST: MASTER TEACHER
2
TEACHING IS THE METHOD BY WHICH THE GOSPEL IS PROPIGATED Matthew 28:19-20 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. 2 Tim. 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

CHRISTIANS OF THE FIRST CENTURY DID AN EFFECTIVE JOB Acts 8:4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word. Col. 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

THEY FOLLOWED THE EXAMPLE OF THE MASTER TEACHER Matthew 7:28-29 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: [29] For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: [29] For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

SOME METHODS JESUS EMPLOYED IN HIS TEACHING JESUS FIRST DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM Matthew 22:23-32 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, [24] Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. [25] Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: [26] Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, [24] Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. [25] Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: [26] Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

THOUGHT CONTINUES… [27] And last of all the woman died also. [28] Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. [29] Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. [30] For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. [31] But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, [32] I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

JESUS FIRST DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM Matthew 19:16-24 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? [17] And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. [18] He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, [19] Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [20] The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

THOUGHT CONTINUES… [21] Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. [22] But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. [23] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. [24] And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. [23] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. [24] And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

JESUS DID NOT EXPECT ALL TO HAVE EQUAL ABILITY Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 25:14-15 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. [15] And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. [15] And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

JESUS OFTEN USED THE FOLLOWING: PRAISE Matthew 8:8-10 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. [9] For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. [10] When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
11
JESUS OFTEN USED THE FOLLOWING: BLAME Matthew 11:20-24 Then He began to reproach the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. [21] "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. [22] "Nevertheless I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you. [23] "And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You shall descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. [24] "Nevertheless I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you."
12
JESUS OFTEN USED THE FOLLOWING: DISGUST FOR SIN Luke 15:16 "And he was longing to fill his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him.
13
JESUS OFTEN USED THE FOLLOWING: AN APPEAL TO LOVE Matthew 22:36-40 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" [37] And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' [38] "This is the great and foremost commandment. [39] "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' [40] "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."
14
JESUS OFTEN USED QUESTIONS SOMETIME RHETORICAL QUESTIONS Matthew 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. Matthew 5:46-47 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax-gatherers do the same? [47] "And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
15
HE OFTEN ANSWERED A QUESTION WITH A QUESTION Matthew 21:23-27 And when He had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?" [24] And Jesus answered and said to them, "I will ask you one thing too, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. [25] "The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?' [26] "But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the multitude; for they all hold John to be a prophet." [27] And answering Jesus, they said, "We do not know." He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
16
JESUS OFTEN LET MEN ANSWER THEIR OWN QUESTION Luke 10:25-28 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" [26] And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" [27] And he answered and said, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." [28] And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS, AND YOU WILL LIVE." And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" [26] And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" [27] And he answered and said, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." [28] And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS, AND YOU WILL LIVE."
17
JESUS OFTEN TURNED THE QUESTION AROUND WITH A PROFOUND STATEMENT. Matthew 9:10-12 And it happened that as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold many tax- gatherers and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. [11] And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners?”[12] But when He heard this, He said, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. And it happened that as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold many tax- gatherers and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. [11] And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners?”[12] But when He heard this, He said, "It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.

JESUS DID NOT BELIEVE THAT EVERY PERSON COULD BE TAUGHT! Matthew 7:6 "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. John 5:39-42 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; [40] and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life. [41] "I do not receive glory from men; [42] but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; [40] and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life. [41] "I do not receive glory from men; [42] but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

NOTICE THOSE WHO COME TO THE LORD John 6:44-45 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. [45] It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
