1 SWEDEN IN THE 60´S ”The dream about the good society”.

2 A HEALTHY SWEDEN GROWS  Since Sweden didn’t take an active part in the second world war, towns and industries were intact which gave Sweden an advantage.  Export of wood, steel, machines and other wares to a Europe in ruins.  Higher income to state, companies and families.  The agriculture became more effecient, many farms got together. Forming bigger ones.  People moved to the cities, where the jobs were.

3 SECURITY  A new human vision would characterize the society, no one would have to ask for help if you were poor or sick. Everyone would be entitled with the right to security and good health.  General child support, health insurance, unemployment insurance and dental ensurance. Were introduced.  A social law would ensure a minimum standard of living.  A reform paid with taxes and payroll taxes.

4 REDISTRIBUTIVE POLITICS  One would pay tax according to ability, the rich more and the poor less.  Redistribution politics meant that more people could afford things they previously couldn’t  Telephone, freezer, refrigerator, car, charter trips.  In the late 60’s, Sweden together with Switzerland had among the world’s highest living standards.

5 A SCHOOL FOR EVERYONE  In 1962 the nine-year compulsary school was introduced.  More people got the opportunity to go on to upper seconary school.  In 1968 an upper secondary school open to all young people age 16-19 was introduced.

6 THE RECORD YEARS AND THE ”MILLIONPROJECT”  The lack of living space was replaced by ”the millionproject”.  One million new housing in ten years was built between 1965 and 1974.  This project gave a lot of new buildings and jobs in the biggest cities.

7 THE MEDIA  In 1965 Sweden got a black/white channel and in the end of the 60’s colour tv and another channel, tv 2 was introduced.  The Swedish Radio had a monopoly of their radio- and tv broadcasts and all advertising was forbidden.

8 YOUTHS AND ”THE LEFT WAVE”  In the end of the 60’s the left wave reached Sweden. The war that USA fought in Vietnam was debated and demonstrations urged USA to ”Go home”.  The left youngsters was studying Mao Zedongs writings and admired the Cultural Revolution in China.  Capitalism was criticized and many youngsters demonstrated against environmental destruction and the demolition fury in the cities.

9 MODERNIZE THE LEADERSHIP OF SWEDEN  Before the 60’s Sweden was ruled by a too old-fashioned parliamentary with two chambers.  A becameral system made it possible for the party ”The Social Democrats” to build a government ongoing for many years.  The opposition was sharply against this.  The result was that Sweden got a unicameral parliament with 350 members and an election every third year.  In 1976 this changed to 349 members and in 1994 an election every forth year was introduced.

10 THE LABOR MIGRATION  A new phenomena grew up. The companies along with the state authorities were forced to solicit labor from other countries.  The Swedish labor wasn’t enough altough many housewives began to work.  The labor immigrants came from former Yugoslavia, Greece and Finland.
