What Is the Internet? Living Online Lesson 2 IC 3 Basics Ambrose, Bergerud, Busche, et. Al.

Evolution of the Internet The Internet is a worldwide network of smaller networks that allow for the exchange of: Data Information E-mail No one person or organization invented the Internet

Evolution of the Internet Internet can be traced to the 1960s and the U.S. Department of Defense Internet grew in 1972 with the addition of e- mail Internet saw real growth when the World Wide Web came into being in 1992

How Computing and the Internet Impact Society Time consuming tasks that once required face-to-face meetings, telephone calls, faxes, or reading through pages of materials can now be performed quickly and efficiently using Internet browsers and e-mail Organizations such as libraries, retail and wholesale businesses, and schools have changed they way they operate

How Computing and the Internet Impact Society By 2002 more than two-thirds of Americans used computers; more than 60% of the population used the Internet at home, work, or school

How Computing and the Internet Impact Society Common home uses include: E-mail Operating home offices Managing household budgets Financial planning Obtaining information about products and services Making on-line purchases Playing games

How Computing and the Internet Impact Society Computer technology operates “behind the scenes” in daily activities such as using ATMs and credit cards Benefits of computers and the Internet include: Automated record keeping Sending mass mailings inexpensively Comparison shopping

How Computing and the Internet Impact Society People who are disabled or disadvantaged benefit by using Voice recognition software Speech synthesis technology

Accessing the Internet Schools and offices are usually connected to the Internet through a local area network (LAN) A network interface card (NIC) allows the computer to be networked

Accessing the Internet The most common home Internet connection is with a modem and telephone lines using these steps: Locate an Internet service provider (ISP) Install telecommunications software Install a Web browser

Accessing the Internet Other types of connections that may be faster include: High-speed digital lines (ISDN) or (DSL) Cable modem Through television

How Does the Internet Work? The Internet is always changing, reshaping, and remolding itself. Computers on the Internet communicate with each other using a set of protocols known as TCP/IP, or Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol. A protocol is a standard format for transferring data between two devices— considered the language of the Internet

Accessing the Internet A domain name identifies a site on the Internet. An example of a domain name is: www.ortn.edu

Major Features of the Internet The terms “World Wide Web” and “Internet” refer to two different things. The Web is an application that makes use of the Internet The Web consists of a collection of electronic files, or Web pages A series of Web pages is a Web site

Major Features of the Internet Web sites can be commercial, academic, or informational The Web uses a protocol called HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol). HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted

Major Features of the Internet A Web site address is referred to as the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use The second part of the address specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located The domain abbreviation at the end of the name indicates what type of organization it is associated with

Major Features of the Internet Common domain abbreviations are: edu (education) gov (government) net (network provider com (commercial businesses) mil (military) org (nonprofit organization)

Major Features of the Internet A second protocol that controls how the World Wide Web works is hypertext markup language (HTML) An electronic message sent from one computer to another is called e-mail An e-mail address consists of three parts: The user name of the individual The @ symbol The user’s domain name Example: rarcher @ortn.edu

Major Features of the Internet A chat room allows individuals to communicate by writing and reading on the computer A mailing list is a group of people with a shared interest. Their e-mail addresses are collected and identified by a single name. Everyone receives the same e-mail A newsgroup is a discussion forum or bulletin board dedicated to a discussion of a particular topic Some newsgroups are moderated (reviewed) and some are not
