Overview –Optical fibre transmission can be used to implement feeder systems in the first-mile network. –CWDM enables greater of flexibility, and better utilisation of the fibre medium –Principle objectives are: To establish a laboratory based CWDM system To explore capacity-on-demand provisioning using different transmission services To explore feeder system interfacing in reconfigurable access networks. Status –To commence around May 2005. Dependent on transmission system development in MUSE project.

Slide 8 JE #2: Time resolved measurements of semiconductor optical amplifiers Partners –University College London (UCL-Photonics) –Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) –Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) Overview –UPC and IT have interests in using SOAs for optical signal processing applications including wavelength conversion and 3R regeneration. –UPC is interested in using SOAs as modulators/photodetectors in the access network. –Knowledge of device recovery important for these applications. –Time resolved measurements of device recovery made at UCL. Status –Measurements completed, January 2005.

9 e-Photon/ONe plenary. 11/02/05. WP13 presentation. Slide 9 JE #3: Investigation of optical fibre transmission impairments Partners –University College London-Optical Networks Group (UCL-ONG) –Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (FhG/HHI). Overview –Future long distance, high data rate, systems will require the use of modulation formats more complex than on-off-keying. –Investigate the impact of optical fibre non-linearity when novel modulation formats are used. –Simulation and numerical modelling. Context –e-Photon/One WP5 and WP10 Status?

10 e-Photon/ONe plenary. 11/02/05. WP13 presentation. Slide 10 JE #4: WDM optical network based on optical packet switching Partners: –Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) –University College London-Optical Networks Group (UCL-ONG) Overview –Focus: experimental implementation of a prototype WDM optical packet switching network –Main target: implementation of an experimental demonstrator, capable of transporting the traffic generated by sources with a "packets directly over optics" approach. –Design of key subsystems for packet and burst-switched networks. Fast tunable lasers Burst mode receivers Status –Work expected to commence in February/March 2005.

11 e-Photon/ONe plenary. 11/02/05. WP13 presentation. Slide 11 JE #5: Subsystems for optical packet switched networks Partners –Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, National Technical University of Athens (ICCS/NTUA –Photonic Networks Lab, University of Essex (UESSEX). Overview –Comparison of switching fabrics, focusing on power penalty, cross talk and switching times. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gates. Wavelength converter + arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). –Investigations of wavelength converters and 2R regeneration, focusing on dynamic range and degree of transparency –Goals: Experimental investigation the above issues. Theoretical verification of the results. Provide conclusions regarding the feasibility of the investigated architectures. Context –e-Photon/One WP4 and WP7

12 e-Photon/ONe plenary. 11/02/05. WP13 presentation. Slide 12 JE #6: Phase characterisation of a pulse source for advanced modulation formats Partners: –Acreo AB –University of Southampton Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) Overview –New modulation formats today make use of phase modulation, to encode data or to increase tolerance to transmission impairments. –Hence important to characterise phase, as well as intensity, of the signal. –Acreo is working on implementation of APRZ. –ORC has extensive experience of phase characterisation of different signal using the linear FROG technique. –Goal: phase characterisation of Acreo sources Context –e-Photon/One WP4 Status –Experiments planned for Feb/March 2005.
