3 HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol o Protocol is just a request to send information o HTTP is the most common o HTTPS – the s means a secure site Sub-domain o Sometimes required o Not always www; not all sites part of the web o www stands for world wide web Domain name o The owner of the address o Name of the web server

4 Domains Top level domain – what kind of website is it o.com – commercial (business for profit) o.org – organization (most often non-profit) o.edu – educational site o.gov – government site o.mil – military site o.net -- network File names are just pages on that website; not necessary to reach the website

6 What the computer sees Computers don’t understand text They transfer Internet into numbers. Computers have an address called an IP Address, just like phones have phone numbers o 23.23.154.295

7 Sending pictures and video Send all your favorite pics to grandma Break into smaller pieces or packets

8 Transmission Fiber – messages with one hand DSL/Cable – message on the back of your hand Wifi – message on head
