2
Industry Handbook What‘s it all about? Industry is one of the main users of Energy How is energy used for industrial processes? What are the problems of energy consumption on such large scale? Where can losses be reduced? How can processes be designed to be more efficient?
3
Industry Handbook Content Content is based on the Industrial and Engineering pathway of efficient energy use The Handbook contains information that’s useful mainly for Students with a focus on Economics and Engineering
4
Industry Handbook Content Introduction to energy Sources of energy Transformation and use of energy Transforming Energy (Energy Carriers) –Industry use Energy Management Efficient use of Energy in the Paper Industry
5
Industry Handbook Chapter 1 - Introduction to energy What is energy and what does it mean? Which measuring Units are used? How do we depend on energy? Environmental problems of large scale energy production.
6
Industry Handbook Chapter 1 - Background Students should get a general idea of “Energy”, what it is and how they depend on it By considering examples they should experience the amount of energy needed for different things in everyday life By understanding the units of Energy measurement, they should be able to understand reported information on the energy demand of different items of equipment
7
Industry Handbook Chapter 1 – How to teach Let the students find out where they use and depend on Energy by setting up a group work Find out how much energy is consumed by different equipment or actions in the students’ everyday life
8
Industry Handbook Chapter 2 - Sources of energy What are the main energy sources used nowadays? How much energy is produced from renewable sources? What are the problems with non-renewable energy sources (fossil & nuclear)
9
Industry Handbook Chapter 2 - Background Student can examine statistical data, to appreciate the scale of different energy sources and use By comparing the performance of different EU countries the use of renewable energy sources and their potential for increased use is demonstrated The problems with fossil and nuclear energy sources are shown by different examples (peak oil, pollution, etc.)
10
Industry Handbook Who uses what fuel?
11
Industry Handbook Peak oil The production of oil is expected to shortly reach a maximum and then decrease EXERCISE Source data: With current known reserves of oil, gas and coal, when will we run out of fossil fuels?
12
Industry Handbook Chapter 2 – How to teach Try to mark out clearly the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources by discussing the problems with fossil fuels (group work, pros vs. cons) Let students find out if and where they can find renewable energy sources in their surroundings Highlight the problems of greenhouse gas emissions by using reports from (maybe your local) media or the Internet
13
Industry Handbook Chapter 3 - Transforming of Energy and Industry Use Chapter divided in two subchapters: 3.1 Transforming Energy (Energy carriers) 3.2 End uses of energy in industry (Level II)
14
Industry Handbook 3.1 - Transforming Energy (Energy Carriers) What are the most common Energy carriers? How are fuel and electricity produced? How is Energy transformed? How do energy flows look like if you consider a whole nation and how big is the amount of energy needed by Industry? (->Level II) What is a national energy balance? (->Level II)
15
Industry Handbook 3.1 - Background By explaining fuel and electricity production students should get information on the main energy carriers used nowadays The potential to gain more efficiency should be marked out by the explanation of Combined Cycle and Combined Heat power plants Using the example of an old National Energy Balance of Ireland, students should get an understanding of the different ways of energy consumption throughout a whole nation
16
Industry Handbook Energy flows & uses
17
Industry Handbook National energy balance
18
Industry Handbook Chapter 3.1 – Ways of Teaching Let the students find out what the main sources of electricity production in their country are Try to mark out which renewable energy sources are used in your country for electricity production Use Experiments for direct understanding of energy efficiency measures
19
Industry Handbook 3.2 - End uses of energy in industry Where are the significant energy losses in different types of industrial equipment (boilers, fans, compressed air systems, etc.)? How can energy losses be reduced? Which cooling and heating fluids are used?
20
Industry Handbook 3.2 - Background 3.2 consists mainly of Level II information for Students with a focus on engineering The main consumers of energy within an industrial plant should be identified by some examples The potential to reach better efficiency is discussed by different industrial equipment (boilers, electric motors, etc.)
21
Industry Handbook Chapter 3.2 – How to teach Work through the different parts of a plant in the Handbook (boilers, fans, etc.) especially mentioning their optimisation potential Think of an excursion to an industrial plant and try to find out about their energy saving efforts on the different process units
22
Industry Handbook Chapter 4: Energy Management What is Energy Management? What are the key elements of the Energy Management System (EMS)? What are the goals of an energy management system? How can such a system be implemented (in industry and business, but also in schools?
23
Industry Handbook Energy Management System
24
Industry Handbook Chapter 4 - Background The benefits of an EMS for a company are marked out by different examples By discussing an energy policy, students should understand that energy efficiency measures have to affect the whole company Students should get to know that a systematic approach is the best way to increase energy efficiency
25
Industry Handbook Chapter 4 – How to teach Try to work out an Energy Policy for your school Work through the different steps of an EMS using the example of your own school Try to establish an EMS at your school, designed by the students, with your help
26
Industry Handbook Chapter 5: Efficient use of energy in paper Industry Level II information on the practical application of energy saving measures. Case study on the efficient use of energy in paper industry. General Information on the paper production Process Different paths of Energy saving in paper Industry Experimental guide on “How to make your own paper”.
27
Industry Handbook Chapter 5 – How to teach Mainly for students with a focus on engineering Try to show the energy flows in a large industrial process Students should learn how energy efficiency measures are implemented in an industrial process on this special case study Use the “Make your own paper” experiment to show students where energy is needed in a large industrial process (drying, heating, etc.)
28
Industry Handbook Icons for better orientation Definition: this is to indicate a definition of a term, explaining what it means. Notes: This shows that something is important, a tip or a vital piece of information. Watch out for these! Learning Objective: These are at the beginning of each chapter and they explain what you will learn in that chapter. Experiment, Exercise or Activity: This indicates something for you to do, base upon what you have learned. Web link: This shows an internet address where you can get more information
29
Industry Handbook Icons for better orientation Reference: This indicates where some information came from. Case Study: When we give an actual example of an industry or a real situation. Key Points: this is a summary (usually in bullet points) of what you have covered, usually at the end of a chapter Question: this indicates when we are asking you to think about a question, especially at the end of chapters
