While exploring the multimedia (Gas in a Syringe) consider the following… ◦ Gases are composed of tiny individual particles that move freely – they bounce off each other! ◦ NOTHING is between particles. ◦ When air is compressed, the particles are closer together so the space between them is less – however, the size of the particles does not change! ◦ When air is expanded, the particles are farther apart so the space between them is more – however, the size of the particles does not change!

Air, like all matter, is composed of tiny particles too small to see. The particles of air, like the particles of all forms of matter, are in constant motion. The particles of air are not touching one another. There is empty space between them. Because the particles are in constant motion, they bounce off one another and the sides of their containers all the time.

Air is a mixture of gases. The gases in air have mass and occupy space. Air is matter. Air can be forced into a smaller space. Air that is forced into a smaller space is compressed air. When the force holding air in a smaller space is removed, the air expands. When matter expands, it occupies more space.
