General Electric Company Story The General Electric Company (GE) is an American multi-national conglomerate corporation with its five business segments: energy infrastructure, technology infrastructure, capital finance, consumer and industrial. GE was named the world’s second largest company after JP Morgan Chase by Forbes in 2010. The company, headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut, has 287,000 employees around the world. Its New York main offices are located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Rockefeller Center. Thomas Edison brought together his business interests to form Edison General Electric. At the time, Thomson-Houston Electric Company acquired a number of its competitors. As a result, GE was formed in 1892 by the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Electric Company. With its long period of working with turbines in the power generation field, GE developed turbo superchargers and introduced its first superchargers during World War I. In 1941, the Whittle W1 jet engine was demonstrated in the US. GE became one of the largest jet engine manufacturers in the world, second to the older British company Rolls-Royce. In 2002, GE acquired Enron Wind, the only surviving US. manufacturer of large wind turbines, during Enron’s bankruptcy. The Wind Division doubled its annual sales to $1.2 billion in 2003 by increasing engineering and supplies for wind turbines. During the 1960s, GE was one of the eight major computer manufacturers in the US.
