Hydrogen Fueling Station Development: Perspective from an Equipment OEM Energy Exchange Phoenix, AZ 8/12/15

2 Proton OnSite…who we are: World leader in commercial PEM electrolysis systems. Founded in 1996. World headquarters in Wallingford, CT. ~ 90 employees. ISO 9001:2008 registered. Over 2,200 systems operating in 75+ different countries.

Proton OnSite: Current Status Industrial markets form base for growth: –2/3 of revenue from product sales –Clear technology leader in PEM electrolysis –Global distribution and support Continuing to grow output and manufacturing capability 3 Industrial Markets Emerging Markets Fueling Backup Power Renewable Energy Storage

4 Integrated Low Pressure Electrolyzer Virginia Class Submarine Proton is a proven supplier of mil spec electrolyzer hardware for mission critical requirements: Delivering stacks for U.S., U.K., and French Navies Proton cell stack Customer: NAVSEA, Code 926

5 Hydrogen Fueling Background at Proton World leader in installed base of PEM electrolyzers –Over 30 fueling project installations to date Proton operates the only publicly accessible hydrogen fueling station on the East Coast (SunHydro 1) Operates a fleet of Toyota FCV’s as part of their pre- commercial test program Creating fully packaged solution for SunHydro working with leading equipment partners Developing multi-hundred kg/day electrolyzer platform to address commercial fueling markets

1 Operations SunHydro 1 Operations Jan 2011 – current >10,000 kg of hydrogen dispensed >3,000 high pressure H2 fills Serving fleet of FCV’s and special purpose vehicles 6

Why the commitment to FCV’s? Vehicle range: –Commercial FCV’s will have > 300 mile range Refill time: –Fast filling capability allows for 3 to 5 minute fills Hydrogen fuel enables renewable fuel pathways via electrolysis and reformed biogas The technology is proven, and the cost curves support consumer acceptance There is a commitment to buildout of hydrogen infrastructure in Europe, Japan, California, etc. ZEV MOU signed by 8 states provides a policy directive to put BEV’s and FCV’s on the road 11

California station development status: 12 54 station projects being tracked; 29 stations either open or approved to build!

SunHydro 2 Project: New H2 fueling capability in Washington, DC Proton OnSite has developed a new compact “site ready” station design, SunHydro 2. In collaboration with DOE and NPS, this equipment design will be demonstrated at the NPS site on Brentwood Ave. The station will provide an important fueling capability for FCV’s that will be used for outreach and market development efforts. 13

Compact H 2 station design 14 Novel Component Arrangements save space, cut cost Two 20’ containers separated by lightweight 2 h firewall Class I Div 2 compression, storage, compression, dispenser, chiller –Open top, bottom for natural ventilation; solid sides –Storage tubes protected by 2 h firewall panels Non-classified electrolyzer, power, control, cooler –Enclosed, ventilated, heated (water equipment) 40 ft (12.2 m) H2 storage tubes H2 compression H2 dispensing water electrolysis system cooling power / control H2 chiller H2 Valve Panels firewall plan view

NPS Site Layout Overview 15

SunHydro 2 Summary: To fuel pending release of FCV’s Small scale footprint and capacity –40’ ISO container integrated unit –Power and water in, H2 fuel out –Fuels 8 FCV/day or 3 FCV/hour –Onsite H 2 generation – no resupply –46 kg H2 total storage, ASME labeled Proven technology - repackaged Meets NFPA, NEC standards 16

Large scale H2 production is ready to support commercial vehicle rollout: 1 MW prototype system integration completed and verification in process M1 prototype on test, producing > 400 kg H2/day 17

18 Proton Strategy for Fueling Market Continue product development to reduce capital cost and improve efficiency of electrolyzer systems Support efforts for renewable fuel credits and other favorable policy initiatives Coordinate station development efforts with vehicle OEM market introduction plans Work with equipment integrators and station developers to provide on-site generation capability for renewable hydrogen Maintain position as world leader in electrolysis technology and electrolysis-based hydrogen for fueling applications
