Similes When a comparison is drawn between 2 objects that have some similarity.  Person who listens to the message and obeys it is like the man who digs deep and builds his house upon a rock (Lk. 6:47-48)  Lord’s disciples must be wise as serpents yet harmless as doves (Matt. 10:16)  As Jonah was 3 days an 3 nights in the great fish’s belly, so the Son of Man will be 3 days and nights in the grave (Matt. 12:40)

Paradox A statement that appears to contradict itself, but is true  The “poor” in spirit possesses the “kingdom” of heaven– Matt. 5:3  Those who “mourn” are “comforted”– Matt. 5:4  The “meek” (submissive) own the earth– Matt. 5:5  “Whoever finds his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it” Matt. 10:39

25. 6. Hyperbole A deliberate exaggeration for dramatic purposes.  When Christ said one should “pluck out” an eye, or “cut off” a hand. – Matt. 5:29-30  Becoming a physical “eunuch” was not the intent of the Lord’s instruction on marriage and divorce. – Matt. 19:12

Synecdoche A part of something stands for a whole.  “kingdom” (church) was likened to a “muster seed” (Matt. 13:31) the point being made was the tiny beginning of the kingdom on Pentecost compared to its vast expansion in the end.  “kingdom” was illustrated by “leaven” (Matt. 13:33) which pictured the quiet but pervasive influence of the Savior’s teaching in changing lives
