Instructing students at UNT ~ Can’t cite books in catalog  Use citation manual or good website for books Example: (Research tools > Scholarly and Professional Style Manuals >MLA Style (Languages and Literature)Scholarly and Professional Style Manuals  Citation Styles Handbook: MLA, available from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Writer’s Workshop, includes a summary of MLA style Citation Styles Handbook: MLAWriter’s Workshop ~ Can cite Article through some databases ~ E-mail articles to yourself ~ Export citations to RefWorks, etc. Example: Academic Search Complete (EbscoHost) http://irservices.library.unt.edu/ais.cfm?alpha=A http://irservices.library.unt.edu/ais.cfm?alpha=A

4 II. Background of Zotero ~ Citation Manager created at George Mason Univ. ~ Funded by IMLS and Carnegie grant ~ Firefox extension (must use Firefox. 5 III. How to capture a book citation Mimicking the book example in the start guide… 1. Do a title search in the UNT catalog: http://iii.library.unt.edu/search/t http://iii.library.unt.edu/search/t 2. Search: Shakespeare the invention of the Human http://iii.library.unt.edu/search/?searchtype=t&searcharg=Shakespeare+the+invention+of+the+human&searchscope=12&SORT=D&extended=1&SUBMIT=Search&searchlimit s=&searchorigarg=tInvention+of+the+Human http://iii.library.unt.edu/search/?searchtype=t&searcharg=Shakespeare+the+invention+of+the+human&searchscope=12&SORT=D&extended=1&SUBMIT=Search&searchlimit s=&searchorigarg=tInvention+of+the+Human Note Permanent URL will not be stored? Use regular URL. 3. Click the Z button on toolbar to make sure it is active 4. Click the blue book icon by the link and it will add the citation automatically. If you get an error message (i.e. translator error”), you can add the citation manually (Create a new item from current page: click the “+” button, choose book, and input citation data)

7 IV. How to capture a journal article citation 1. Access a database like Academic Search Complete 1. http://irservices.library.unt.edu/ais.cfm?alpha=A http://irservices.library.unt.edu/ais.cfm?alpha=A 2. Search the database for an article 3. Click on an article title and the record will open up 4. Click the article icon in the toolbar to save to Zotero 5. To view the full article you may need to click the Article Linker. Then open up the PDF. Take a snapshot if PDF will not be stored. 9 V. Special Features: exporting data or create bibliography 1. Click the gear “action” icon 2. Choose “export library” 3. Select a format 4. Export files (Check boxes) 5. Click Okay ~ New window will pop-up. Click Save. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * > Right click on folder saved citation to Create a Bibliography in a given citation format! Other features: import library, add tags, add Related sites, stand- alone notes, search your library, store a copy of a file, and more!
