Cataloging & Metadata Services Transform OCLC’s shared cataloging services to serve a broader community of member institutions, and enhance the breadth and depth of the metadata in WorldCat for both electronic and print resources. An enriched WorldCat is crucial for meeting the needs of today’s information seekers in a web-based environment.
21
The Environment Dramatic increase in the need for authoritative bibliographic information for electronic and print. New information exchange and harvesting protocols like OAI The traditional bibliographic record is not enough to satisfy the raised expectations of the patron. A large number of library professionals (40-50%) are eligible for retirement in the next ten years. Professional catalogers in particular are not being developed in library information science programs thus a whole new generation of users with different expectations must be served.
22
What does it mean? Copy cataloging will be done more and more by untrained staff using expert systems which hide the complexity of MARC and AACR2. – CatExpress – New expert systems Shelf-ready services will become more common place for the processing of physical materials. – PromptCat – TechPro More original cataloging will be created via metadata harvesting, by materials vendors, publishers, OCLC, etc.
