Carolina... A Research University Robert P. Lowman, Ph.D. Associate Vice Chancellor for Research The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

A Few Facts About the University and its Extramural Programs

Among the Leaders Now 20 th in federal science & engineering support, and the only N.C. university in the top 20 (NSF) First among public universities in the south in NIH funding (13 th overall) Among the top four public research universities in the nation (Lombardi et al., 2000) 9 th nationally in federal funding for fellowships, traineeships, and training grants 42 of our graduate programs in the top 25 11 th in faculty members in national academies (35)

IH Among the Leaders in NIH Funding 13th in total NIH Support ($207 million) 3rd in NIH Support to Dental Schools ($8.4 million) 15th in NIH Support to Medical Schools ($144.2 million) 3rd in NIH Support to Schools of Nursing ($5.3 million) 25th in NIH Support to Schools of Pharmacy ($1.5 million) 5th in NIH Support Schools of Public Health ($28.8 million)

NASA Provides Important Support to UNC-Chapel Hill Funding from NASA in State Fiscal Year 2001 was $1,454,692 The level of support may seem modest, but UNC-Chapel Hill has no School of Engineering

In Computer Science Research is how we train graduate students – Each spends at least a semester as RA Research experience helps our graduates excel –Most work in industry for companies such as Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Nortel, AT&T, and Silicon Graphics.

Henry Fuchs, professor of computer science, looks on while Etta Pisano, associate professor radiology, tries out augmented reality on a mannequin. The technology uses computed tomography and ultrasound to augment what a surgeon would normally see. Virtual reality and computer graphics are strengths of the computer science program at UNC-Chapel Hill

Medical Science has been Important to NASA Since 1989, NASA has supported Professor Mitsuo Yamauchi in the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry Studies have included biochemical changes of bone in a model of weightlessness and bone matrix changes during skeletal unloading and reloading

Integration of NASA Remote Sensing Data and the Social Sciences Ronald Rindfuss uses cellular automaton modeling to develop simulations of land use scenarios With NASA funding, the research draws heavily on recent work in remote sensing, demography, sociology, complexity theory, and related social and biophysical disciplines.

Chris Martens, professor of marine sciences, in Brazil, where he and his team have done field work measuring gases emitted from the rain forest. Part of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA), led by Brazil, with U.S. participation, and funded by NASA.

Collaboration in science and education

Research to understand carbon nanotubes, understand their intercalation chemistry, and evaluate them as potential energy storage devices. Left: Carbon nanotubes Below: Otto Zhou’s lab

We bring high quality programs in the physical, atmospheric, earth and ocean sciences, mathematics and computer science. We also have outstanding strength in biology, health, and the behavioral and social sciences. Collectively, we have a great deal to offer NASA in the years to come. UNC-Chapel Hill Stands Ready to Strengthen Its Partnership with NASA
