Since the date of its foundation in 1773 the first institution of higher technical education in Russia St.Petersburg Mining University has been not only a source of manpower for the national mineral and raw material sector, but a leading research and development centre of mining industry as well. Scientific research of the University focused on the decision of the innovative-technological problems of mineral raw materials and fuel-energy complexes of the country. On February 5, 2012 on the Russian inland Vostok station, successfully carried out a unique drilling project, having no analogues in the world practice: a deep ice hole at a depth of 3769.3 m happened penetration to the subglacial lake Vostok.
