Five areas of competence The Eurydice report (2011) highlights the following competencies in mathematics: Mastering basic skills and procedures; Understanding mathematical concepts and principles; Applying mathematics in real-life contexts; Communicating about mathematics; and Reasoning mathematically. (Mathematics Education in Europe: Common Challenges and National Policies, 2011)

Competence skills in the curriculum Explore curriculum documents; Where are the competence skills? How can teaching promote these alongside developing content knowledge?

Developing competencies and knowledge Share the main points from the paired work. Read the extract and examples on page 1 of the handout; What knowledge and competencies may be developed through these contrasting examples?

Finishing off How can IBL begin to address the curricular demands of mathematics ? Select one element from the curriculum and design a short task with an IBL approach to develop both knowledge and some relevant competencies. Use the Mascil materials to provide inspiration!
