Sport Taping and Wrapping

Mechanism of Injury Ligaments and muscles can be stressed and cause pain when… When a joint exceeds its normal range of motion Is violently contracted Receives repetitive micro trauma

Green Light Criteria Is the athlete: -psychologically/mentally ready to return to play? Does the athlete have: -100% range of motion? -100% strength? -No pain?

Determine the Mechanism and Severity of Injury Ask the athlete: How did you get hurt? Where does it hurt? What does it feel like? Scale of 0-10 Ask yourself: How severe is it? Can I rule out bone injury?

Signs and Symptoms of a Bone Injury -Deformity -Extreme pain -Gross swelling -Grating sensation -Inability or reluctance to move the injured part These signs indicate a “red light” situation, Emergency Action Plan should be initiated **If an athlete doesn’t want to move a body part DON’T move it for him/her

When to use tape If the answer is “yes” to all of the “Green Light Criteria” then consider a taping technique. If the answer is “No” to one or more of the criteria than proceed with the PIER principle

Contraindications/Precautions to Wrapping and Taping Include Athlete must meet “Green Light” criteria If the athlete exhibits any components of SHARP Applying the elastic bandage too tightly can partially or totally restrict blood flow Applying elastic bandage in the wrong direction will result in increasing stress on the joint

Contraindications/Precautions to Wrapping and Taping Include -Clips may cut the athlete (use tape) -Fractures should not be wrapped -Some participants may be allergic to tape adhesive or spray -Prepare athlete’s skin prior to taping; underwrap, cover cuts, scrapes, blisters with band-aids or gauze prior to taping
