11. P ARTITIONING S HAPES INTO EQUAL SHARES Students are exploring region models other than the typical circle or rectangle When partitioning a whole shape into parts, it is important to understand that the size of the parts must be equal, but the shape of the parts do not have to be the same.

12. D IFFERENTIATING BETWEEN A REA AND P ERIMETER  Van de Walle states that students struggle with knowing the difference between perimeter and area. The perimeter tasks in this unit are designed to help students discover this difference by connecting perimeter of polygons to measurement.

14. A REAS OF C ONCERN Students should classify shapes by attributes and by drawing shapes that fit specific categories. Students should be able to develop a conceptual understanding of perimeter. Students who develop this understanding will be less likely to confuse area and perimeter.
