History of York founded by the Romans in 71 AD the capital of the Roman province Britannia Inferior Middle Ages - a major wool trading centre 19th century – a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre the University of York and health services - major employers now tourism - an important element of the local economy

Geography York – in a flat area of fertile arable land the city was built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss prone to flooding from the River Ouse - walls along the Ouse and a liftable barrier across the River Foss
