1 Experience in China Ashley N. Lawson Emporia State University July 2012

2 Study Abroad This was our first day in china! We were on our way to the hospital because a student needed stitches! What a way to start a trip in a foreign country!!!!!!

3 Guangzhou, China  3 rd Largest City in China  Largest in Southern China  Manufacturing hub for Pearl River Delta  Mainland China’s leading commercial and manufacturing region.

4 Climate: Subtropical It is really humid in the region. I found that carrying an umbrella shielded me from the sun. Be sure to drink plenty of water!

5 Places to visit in Guangzhou Canton Tower & Lingnan Impression Park

6 Canton Tower Picture taken at night during river cruise This was a fun surprise for our group to experience!

7 Canton Tower Tour Constructed : November 2005 -2010 Height 108 Floors Antenna Spire 600 Meters Roof 459.2 Meters Uses Telecommunication Restaurants Observation Tower Hope you’re not afraid of heights!

8 Canton Tower We went to the top!! ESU Graduate Student, Brad Kessell enjoying the view! B. Kessell enjoyed Canton Tower very much! He must not be afraid of heights!

10 Old meets New: New construction towering over the ancient buildings ESU student Kyle Griswald trying his hand at reading Chinese! Fun fact: Kyle is a Chinese language and culture minor! He was excited to be challenge his abilities in China.

12 Ivory carvingBonsai tree This Ivory carving was particularly stunning. This picture does not do it justice because it does not show the amount of intricacy and detail the artist put into this.

13 Teaching: The Experience of a Lifetime

14 ESU and SCNU students participate in a group discussion. ESU graduate students, Brad Kessell teaching American Culture: College Life. Fun Fact: Only one student from the ESU group was a Teaching Major!

15 ESU graduate student, Ashley Lawson teaching at SCNU Graduate Student, Brad Kessell during group cultural exchange. Not knowing what to expect, we spent at least 2 hours a night preparing for class the next day. Teaching is HARD WORK!

16 ESU students, Daniel Zachary and Brad Kessell enjoying tea time before lunch. ESU students get a lesson on playing Mahjong. Tea and Mahjong are both important parts of the Chinese Culture.

17 A day at the beach Who says teachers are not fun? Two ESU student teachers enjoying an hour at the beach!

18 Transportation Subway: ESU group during their first time on subway in Guangzhou. ESU Grad Student, Brad Kessell on sleeper train to Beijing. (only 26 hours) Advice: When booking ticket for sleeper train… book the bottom, more expensive bunk. There is no ladder to use if you are in the middle or top bunk

19 Free time Great Wall of China Forbidden City

20 Welcome to the Great Wall Almost to the wall (5.5 hour hiking total) Brad Kessell nearing the tallest point of this portion of the wall.

21 Great Wall Finally made it to the top! Brad Kessell couldn’t be happier Instead of going to the touristy section of the Great Wall. We went to another and were able to hike a trail to the wall!! What a workout!

22 Forbidden City Squish! Iconic area directly outside the city

23 Forbidden City Last day in china… This was a amazing way to spend our last 4 days in China! Make sure if you plan on traveling for this program you can take a few days just for yourself to travel!

24 Landed in Kansas City, KS safely! Goodbye China. Hello HOME!!!
