MA194Using WindowsNT2 File Extension Mappings Recall from last week, each file under NT has an extension (.PPT,.HTML,.DOC, etc) Each extension may have an application associated (mapped) to it, known as the file type extension. To list the file types, click View, Options from the menubar of the Explorer window.

4. MA194Using WindowsNT4 File extension mappings: Limitations These mappings are 1 - 1, that is, only one application may be listed as the default for a given file extension. However, other applications may be associated with the file type and selected from the menu that pops up from a right-mouse click.

5. MA194Using WindowsNT5 Creating your own mappings To create your own extension mapping, open the NT Explorer and click on View, Options and the File Types tag. This presents the current map list. It will also allow us to create a new file extension mapping.

7. MA194Using WindowsNT7 Adding applications to mappings To add other options (applications) for a given file type, just add them into the list of Actions for a given extension. Whatever is listed first will be the default action (ie, when the icon is double-clicked) unless you choose the Set Default option for one specific entry in the list.

MA194Using WindowsNT8 The QuickView program For the sake of convenience, an general purpose reader program is available to allow you to open a file quickly, without necessarily having to run the entire application associated with that file type. The QuickView program allows you to view many types of files.

10. MA194Using WindowsNT10 The SendTo menu Part of the User Profile section for your NT account deals with the menu of options you will see for a given file type. These options can allow you to copy a file to a floppy disk, drop it on a printer or load it into a favourite application, all of which are listed under the SendTo menu.

11. MA194Using WindowsNT11 Adding to the SendTo menu Look in your account’s home directory and find the SendTo folder. Dragging icons of programs (shortcuts) into this area will automatically add them to the SendTo menu. By default, you should see entries for your briefcase, the floppy drive and perhaps a printer. Add a program, such as Netscape.

Obviously, different steps are needed when printing a WordPerfect document as opposed to a simple text file. The special action case will be listed in the Action list as Printto (2 t’s there)
