Geographical Division The British Isles consist of two large islands: Great Britain (comprising England, Wales and Scotland) and Ireland (comprising the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland) and more than 5,000 smaller islands. The smaller islands include: the Isle if Wight (off the southern coast of England) the Isles of Scilly (off the extreme south-west) the Isle of Man (in the Irish Sea) Anglesey (off north Wales) the Orkneys and the Shetlands (to the north of Scotland).

Topografy The topography of Great Britain can be divided into two parts: Lowlands (south – east) and Highlands (north – west) The highest mountain is Ben Nevis ( 1,342 m). The British Isles have a lot of rivers, many of them are connected by a network of canals. The longest rivers are the Severn, the Thames, the Clyde. The country has also many lakes, especially in Scotland - Loch Lomond, Loch Ness. In England the most beautiful lake is Lake Windemere in the Lake District.

Languages Besides English, which is the language mainly spoken, there are the following varieties of Celtic : - Welsh - Gaelic - Irish (Irish Gaelic) Welsh is spoken by people in Wales. It is the first language of the majority of population in some western parts of the country. Gaelic is spoken by some 80,000 people in Scotland. Irish is the first official language in the Republic of Ireland.

Interesting Facts English language is a West Germanic language, originating from England. Over fifty percent of the English language is derived from Latin English is the third most common "first" language (native speakers), with around 402 million people in 2002.

Slang Words Below there are a few slang words commonly used in Britain. Bloke - man. 'John is a nice bloke to know.' Botched - poor quality repairs. 'He made a botched job of fixing the television.' Bottle - courage. 'He doesn't have the bottle to ask her.'

Political Division The British Isles are divided into two independent states: - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - the Republic of Ireland - The UK covers 242,400 km2, at present the population is over 57 million. The British population includes the English, the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and many immigrants. In the past Great Britain was politically divided into three parts: the Kingdom of England, the Kingdom of Scotland and the Principality of Wales.

Political Division Ireland was conquerred by Henry II in 1171, but first King of England who also took the title King of Ireland was Henry VIII in 1541. The full official title of the British state is rather long - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the shortened form – the United Kingdom – UK is generally used. In everyday English Britain is normally used instead. But it is wrong to say England instead of the UK or Britain, because England is only one part of the UK. The capital of the UK is London.
